Chikungunya is a rare form of viral fever spread by mosquito bites. The mosquito responsible for the spread of the virus is called the aedes aegypti mosquito which is a carrier between human beings and virus. The virus belongs to the genus Alpha virus and species is chikungunya. This virus in the past 50 years has suffered a Mutation and was able to multiply in a fast manner and hence this vast distribution. The name is derived from “that which bends up” in reference to the stooped posture developed as a result of the arthritic symptoms of the disease. The disease was first described by Mr. Marion Robinson in 1955 following an outbreak on the makonde plateau.

Chikungunya is not considered to be fatal but in 2005-2006, 200 deaths were Announced associated with chikungunya in reunion island. The disease is spelt wrongly as chicken guinea in some areas of the world which is not correct.

The symptoms of chikungunya include fever which can reach up to 102 degree F. The associated symptoms may have the multiple joint pains (arthritis) due to inflammation and swelling due to disturbed blood circulation. Petechial and maculopapular rashes (Red spot and color changes in the skin) involves limbs and trunk. Phtophobia and conjuctival infection may arise in rare cases but high fever and crippling joint pain is the prevalent symptoms during the recent epidemic in India.

The fever typically lasts only for two or three days and abruptly comes down. However, the joint pain, insomnia, and an extreme degree of prostration (lack of energy) last for 5 to 7 days.  There is no specific treatment for chikungunya and this illness is usually self-limiting and will resolve with time. Some other symptoms include subungual hemorrhage (bleeding beneath the nail), hyper pigmentation over the photo distributed areas.

There is no specific vaccination is available at present for prevention. A promising result achieved by chloroquine phosphate and other antibiotics. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are beneficial in improving arthritic conditions. Steroids are also used for the same purpose but with caution and with strict medical care.  Following the recent outbreak in south India, several homeopathy practitioners are prescribing medicines that is supposed to prevent the disease. However, there has been no scientific studies to confirm the effectiveness of homeopathy against chikungunya.
